Ten minutes later, Rowan and Tarvish appeared in the driveway, in Tarvish’s new truck. As they slid out of the vehicle, I leaned back, relieved. My grandmother was here and she would make everything okay.

“What the hell is going on?” Rowan asked as she settled into the backseat next to the cat carrier containing Xi. Tarvish managed to get into the other side, although he had to set Klaus’s carrier on his lap.

“I have no idea,” I said. “So much has been going on the past few days and I have no clue what to think about most of it. I need your help. We need your help.”

At that moment Killian, sitting on the front seat, changed back into his human form, fully naked and gorgeous. Rowan, who had been leaning between the front seats, let out a chortle.

“Congratulations, granddaughter.” She put just enough spice in her words that Killian blushed and looked around for something to cover his penis. Rowan handed him her straw hat and he groaned, but placed it over his groin. “So what happened?”

“I don’t know where to begin. But tonight, something showed up in the bathroom causing havoc and it tried to drown Xi. My kitties aren’t safe in my own home and I don’t know what to do.” I felt horribly guilty, as though I had opened the door to a predator.

My grandmother got out of the car. She motioned to me. “You, come with me. Tarvish and Killian, stay with the cats.” She was carrying a bag over her shoulder and I could only chance a guess at what was in it. Rowan never came unprepared.

I followed her, still nerve-racked by what had happened. But I felt safer with Rowan than I did with just about anybody. We dashed up the front stairs and she didn’t even hesitate. She just walked over to the front door and slammed it open, charging in. I followed more slowly.

Once inside, she took a quick look around, frowning. “Okay, I can tell that something was here, but it’s gone now. Whatever it is, though, it’s chaotic and powerful. You said that you were upstairs when it showed up?”

I nodded. “Yeah, we were in the bathroom. I was taking a bath and it almost killed Xi. I want it gone. Nobody attacks my cats and lives to tell the tale.”

“Come on, let’s take a look.” Rowan jogged up the stairs and I followed her. My stomach clenched, but she pushed open the door and peeked in. “Oh good gods. I assume that you didn’t do this.” She stepped inside, moving out of the way so I could enter behind her.

The bathroom was a mess. Ectoplasm oozed off of almost every surface. The water that had been in the bathtub was gone—the plug had been pulled. And across the mirror, streaks of what looked like snotty blood dripped down the glass.

“Is that blood?” I asked.

Rowan leaned toward it and sniffed. “No, just colored ectoplasm.”

She glanced at the vanity, which was covered with a jumble of items.
